Olumide Sporty Adewumi is the Liberal candidate for Red Deer-Mountain View. He is seeking election to public office for the first time.
His experience in the oil and gas sector and more recently as a small business owner would help him provide strong leadership should he be elected, he said in an Albertan interview.
“I think in Red Deer-Mountain View we need to be able to support our economy by revising the oil and gas industry,” he said. “Some of the other things I would like to see would be to finish the fight against COVID-19 and also ensure that we have good health care for our people.
“We have a lot of seniors who have had health issues during the pandemic. We need to able to focus on that and help individuals with disabilities and with MS. That seems to be neglected in society and if I’m elected that is one of things I will be taking action on.”
Adewumi has a bachelor’s and a master’s degree in chemical and petroleum engineering. He says he is knowledgeable about crude oil production, workplace safety, environmental processes and operational standards.
He says he has advocated for workplace safety through his memberships in the Canadian Society of Safety Engineering, Alberta Health and Safety Professionals, American Society of Safety Professionals.
Supporting small businesses and the Canadians that are employed by them is crucial to the stability of Alberta, he says.
“I understand the challenges small businesses face and the role the government must take for a strong economic recovery,” he said.
If elected, Adewumi says he will “advocate for issues that are important to Red Deer-Mountain View including job security, social equality, health care, workplace safety, and childcare.”
During his opening remarks at the Sept. 8 candidates’ forum in Innisfail, Adewumi said as a member of Parliament he would “work to make life affordable for everyone and protect the environment and fight for clean water and clean air.
“It is of the utmost importance that Canada’s natural ecosystems are preserved for future generations through lower carbon initiatives and strong environmental initiatives. We want to continue to move Canada forward for everyone.”
Originally from Nigeria, Adewumi is 47 years old.
