There's a five-way race to be the next elected member of the 45th Canadian Parliament for the Yellowhead riding in the April 28 federal election.

The Albertan offered candidates an opportunity to submit a bio and outline policy priorities while also answering two questions: First, what do you think the Canadian government should be prepared to do in response to the ongoing threat of U.S. tariffs? And second, would you support or speak out against any suggestions for Alberta to separate or become the 51st state?

All five candidates submitted responses which were edited to fit the specified word count.

Vicky Bayford, People’s Party of Canada

I am a fifth-generation Albertan dedicated to restoring freedom and self-sufficiency in our riding.

My goal is to represent the people of Yellowhead by advocating for a significant reduction in government size and promoting a free economy.

This approach will create a supportive environment for our small businesses and entrepreneurs, who have historically been the economic backbone of Alberta.

I believe in accountability and transparency, and as a Member of Parliament, my primary role would be to serve the people I represent.

On the question of what the Canadian government should be prepared to do in response to the ongoing threat of U.S. tariffs, the Canadian government needs a strong leader capable of effectively negotiating with our neighbours to the south in order to establish mutually beneficial agreements.

At the same time, the federal government should focus on enhancing Canada’s competitiveness in global markets.

Since 2000, productivity has declined by 5.6 per cent and is showing no signs of improvement. Burdensome regulations and a high-tax environment have hindered the Canadian economy.

It is time to significantly reduce bureaucracy, eliminate unnecessary taxes such as the carbon tax, and create an environment that fosters productivity in Canada, so that we are less dependent on foreign trade.

On the question of would you support or speak out against any suggestions for Alberta to separate or become the 51st state, I support Alberta's independence.

Unless the rest of Canada is willing to change the constitution and negotiate a better deal with Alberta, the province will continue to be at the mercy of Ottawa and the welfare system they have established. For the most part, Albertans were initially willing to "help out" and be good partners in Canada, but they eventually realized that they were not in a true partnership; instead, we have been subservient to the Laurentian elites with no meaningful voice. Alberta has the capability to stand on its own, but it will require the will of the people to make it happen.
