If snowshoeing is something you love, or something you are interested in trying for the first time, why not begin in some of Alberta’s most attractive wilderness spots?

Sundre

Sundre is a small town in Alberta. It is located along the Cowboy Trail, which gives it loads of natural beauty. Although not as well known perhaps as Banff or Jasper, don’t let is this small community fool you. Sundre is known for its volume of groomed trails that make it perfect for winter walking or cross-country skiing. Snake Hill recreational area is a prime location for snowshoers who want to take in the beauty of an Alberta winter while also challenging themselves to some fitness. Sundre is a great spot for day trips because after you pack away your snowshoes you can visit its boutique shops or indulge in drinks and cuisine at local pubs and eateries.

Elk Island National Park

This national park has gorgeous multi-use trails that invite skiers and snowshoers alike. Although it is requested that snowshoers create their own trail or follow existing snowshoe trails rather than shoeing on or across the ski trails, it is a spot that offers tons of variety and the potential to see wildlife too. The park invites you to bring your own shoes, but it also offers rental equipment. Combine snowshoeing with other hobbies like photography or bird watching to make the most out of your visit. The park is conveniently close to Edmonton, making it a great choice for winter day trips or an excellent location to stop at and spend a few hours if you are passing through and looking to take a break from the road.

Kananaskis County

This wonderous countryside is part of Banff National Park, and if you are an Albertan who has never been there, or if you plan to be in Alberta over the winter, you need to make time to see it. Here you can book guided snowshoe tours and visit some of the areas most sought after locations and landscapes. This is the perfect destination for anyone looking for an active weekend getaway. With accommodation choices galore, you can sleep in the majestic shadow of the Rocky Mountains and snowshoe to your heart’s content solo, or with a tour. Tours often include pickup and drop offs, as well as lunch at an area lodge.

Alberta offers some of the most picturesque landscapes in Canada, regardless of the season. Winter in Alberta can be very cold, and many find themselves stuck indoors, waiting for spring to get back outside again. Don’t let the snow stop you though! Take advantage of the many winter sporting activities available across the province. Snowshoeing is an amazing and rewarding sport that requires no special skills, and can be done for an hour or two, or an entire day, it’s up to you! Get outside and discover Alberta this winter.
