Bow Valley's Paralympians Day 1 recap: Arendz wins bronze in Para biathlon sprint, five Canadians in top 10

Canada's Mark Arendz takes bronze on day one of the 2022 Winter Paralympics.

BEIJING – Canada’s medal-hunter Mark Arendz picked up where he left off four years ago with a bronze on day one at the Beijing 2022 Winter Paralympic Games.

The 32-year-old from Prince Edward Island shot eight-for-10 and crossed the line at 17:13.6 in the standing men’s biathlon sprint on Saturday (March 5) at the Zhangjiakou National Biathlon Centre in China.

Ukraine's Vovchynskyi Grygorii (10/10) won gold at a time of 16:17.6, and Germany's Marco Maier (10/10) took silver at a time of 17:03.4.

The bronze was Arendz's ninth Paralympic medal in four Games.

In the women’s sitting races, Canada’s Christina Picton finished seventh at a time of 23:50.7.

Picton shot clean (10-for-10) in her Paralympics debut.

Oksana Masters of the United States won gold, shooting clean and finishing at a time of 20:51.2. China's Shan Yilin (10/10) took silver and U.S.A’s Kendall Gretsch (9/10) took bronze.

In the men’s sitting sprint, Canada’s Collin Cameron finished seventh, shooting seven-for-10 and crossing the line at a time of 20:24.7.

Canada’s Derek Zaplotinsky was 14th, shooting eight-for-10 and finishing at a time of 21:15.6.

China’s Liu Zixu won gold and shot clean at a time of 18:51.5. Ukraine’s Taras Rad (9/10) finished second and China’s Liu Mengtao (9/10) was third.

In the women's standing, Canada's Emily Young finished seventh, shooting clean and crossing the line at a time of 20:31.0.

Canada's Brittany Hudak was eighth, shooting nine-for-10 and finishing at 20:32.4.

After a rifle malfunction during the first trip to the range, Canada's Natalie Wilkie was pushed out of contention early and had to ski five, 100-metre penalty loops. She finished 15th and on 13/20 shooting.

China's Guo Yujie (9/10) won gold at a time of 19:43.3, Ukraine's Liudmyla Liashenko took silver, and China's Zhao Zhiqing (9/10) snatched bronze.
