EDMONTON — Alberta's police watchdog says it is investigating the shooting death of a 48-year-old man during a confrontation with Edmonton police.
The Alberta Serious Incident Response Team says police were called on Friday after a man was seen with a gun in the alley behind a motel, and then in the backyard of a nearby home in the city's east end.
ASIRT says police and a tactical unit surrounded the home within 10 minutes and found a man at the back.
The agency says a confrontation occurred and two officers discharged their service weapons, striking the man and fatally wounding him.
ASIRT says a 12-gauge, semi-automatic shotgun with a single round in the chamber was recovered at the scene, and the man had nine more shotgun shells and a fully loaded magazine with five rounds in his pockets.
ASIRT says the man, who has not been identified, had three Criminal Code court-ordered lifetime prohibitions against possession of firearms and ammunition.
The response team investigates actions involving police officers that result in serious injury or death, or that lead to serious or sensitive allegations of misconduct.
