EDMONTON — Premier Jason Kenney has announced a new jobs minister after the previous one resigned.

Kenney says in a statement that Tanya Fir will become the minister for jobs, economy and innovation and continue to serve as the associate minister of red tape reduction.

He says the legislature member for Calgary-Peigan has previously served in the portfolio, so she is ready to hit the ground running.

The vacancy came after Doug Schweitzer resigned from cabinet.

Schweitzer has said he will also resign as the United Conservative Party legislature member for Calgary-Elbow by the end of the month.

He had already announced in May he would not run in the next general election, which is slated for May 2023.
