EDMONTON — Police say a man is facing charges after officers discovered images depicting "extreme" graphic abuse and violence against young children.
The arrest was made last week as computers and electronic devices were seized from a home in Edmonton.
Staff Sgt. Jonathan Morrison of the ALERT Internet Child Exploitation unit says the material is some of the worst he has been exposed to.
He says his unit worries the accused may have had access to children and is encouraging anyone with information to contact police.
Jason Campbell, 44, has been charged with possessing, distributing and accessing child pornography.
He has been released from custody and is to appear in court Nov. 24.
“The unfortunate trend we are seeing in our office is the escalation of the egregiousness of the child sexual abuse material located during our investigations, which causes our unit great concern," Morrison said in a news release Thursday.
The National Centre for Missing and Exploited Children reported earlier this year that an unknown individual was sharing material linked to child sexual abuse.
The Internet Child Exploitation unit says it started a priority investigation in September given the "extreme content."
