PICTOU, N.S. — Nova Scotia RCMP say about $35,000 in specialized life-saving equipment was stolen from a volunteer fire department in Pictou County, about 160 kilometres northeast of Halifax.
Police say they responded on Sunday to a break-in at a fire department in Barneys River, N.S., and discovered that items had been stolen and the building's front door had been damaged.
They say the stolen gear included a set of Jaws of Life — specialized metal-cutting equipment used to rescue people from car crashes.
Other stolen items included an electric ram, a power saw and a reciprocating saw, all used in rescue operations.
Police say this equipment is not readily available because of its specialized nature.
They say anyone with information about the theft, which likely occurred between Wednesday and Sunday, is asked to contact the Pictou County District RCMP.
