HALIFAX — Police in Halifax say five people were shot when two men exchanged gunfire near a crowd at an event in Africville Park on Saturday night.

Around 10 p.m., police responded to reports of multiple shots fired and learned that five people were hurt when shots went into the surrounding crowd.

One person's injuries are believed to be life-threatening, and all five were transported to hospital.

Crowds of people were in Africville, a historic Black community in the north end of Halifax that was demolished in the 1960s, this weekend for the annual African Nova Scotian community's reunion.

The reunion schedule says there was a DJ and dance event held Saturday night in Africville Park at the time of the reported shooting.

Police say the investigation is in its early stages and no arrests have been made.
