HALIFAX — A pilot program in Nova Scotia will offer free practical nursing training for 25 continuing care assistants.
The program will help certified continuing care assistants who have worked in a nursing home or home care agency for at least two years become licensed practical nurses.
Barbara Adams, minister of seniors and long-term care, says the program will reduce financial barriers and help attract workers to the continuing care sector.
The training takes two-and-a-half years and will start in January, with online classes and in-person labs at Nova Scotia Community College's Truro campus.
Students will be required to commit to work full-time in continuing care in Nova Scotia for a minimum of two years after graduating and passing a certification exam.
Applicants will need to meet the community college's practical nursing program requirements to be eligible for the pilot program, and the department will cover the costs of tuition, textbooks and the majority of fees for the students.
