HALIFAX — Most schools in New Brunswick and P.E.I. are closed today as a winter storm descends on the Atlantic region.
Environment Canada is calling for up to 40 centimetres of snow in northern and northeastern New Brunswick by Saturday, with lesser amounts of snow and heavy rainfall in the forecast for the rest of the province.
Poor driving conditions in parts of western New Brunswick have prompted the RCMP to issue warnings to drivers on the Trans-Canada Highway between the Quebec border and Grand Falls.
Meanwhile, rainfall warnings are in effect for mainland Nova Scotia, where up to 80 millimetres of rain is expected by Saturday.
Residents of P.E.I. can expect an ugly mix of rain, freezing rain and up to 20 centimetres of snow by this afternoon in the central and western portions of the Island.
And on the western half of Newfoundland, freezing rain and winter storm warnings have bee issued for many communities, with up to 40 centimetres of snow expected over the Great Northern Peninsula.
