SAULNIERVILLE, N.S. — An investigation is underway after a man was found dead following a boating collision on a small lake in western Nova Scotia, police said Monday.
RCMP spokeswoman Allison Gerrard said that after the collision Friday on Eel Lake — about 50 kilometres north of Yarmouth, N.S. — one person was rescued and a 62-year-old Halifax man was reported missing.
Gerrard said that after an extensive search, the missing boater was found dead Sunday night. The person who was rescued wasn't injured, she added.
In a release later in the day, Gerrard said the crash occurred when a 4.25-metre aluminum boat -- "travelling at speed" -- ran into a stationary 3.7-metre boat on the lake, sending both men in the larger boat into the water.
She said the people in the smaller boat rescued one of the men in the water but were unable to find the 62-year-old man.
A team involving about 60 people searched for the missing man throughout the weekend with help from a Department of Natural Resources helicopter. He was located at about 7:30 p.m. Sunday.
The RCMP have seized both boats, and an investigation into the cause of the crash is underway.
