An act of vandalism at St. Mary Catholic School in Beaverlodge has caused damages totalling $100,000 after 70 windows were broken.
Beaverlodge RCMP said the vandalism is believed to have occurred between the evening of July 31 and the morning of Aug. 1.
“The information gathered at this time has not led to sufficient evidence to allow for the arrest and charge of any individuals,” RCMP said in a statement.
An interview request by Town & Country News to the Grande Prairie & District Catholic School Division was not received by press time.
“We are reaching out to the community for assistance in identifying anyone who may have seen or heard something related to this incident,” said the RCMP.
The school division has stated damages would be covered under the district's insurance.
“We are blown away by the support of our community and are so grateful for all the kind words,” said the school.
The images of the smashed windows on social media left many angered, some blaming local youths while others asked that fingers of blame so not be blamed nonchalantly.
One local said he believes it's a group of six teenagers and noted other damages to his own home from vandals.
Beaverlodge Coun. Cody Moulds voiced his frustrations saying, “We need to blast the kids on social media.
“The parents that are pissed off about it can pay for the damages being done around town, and maybe the pictures will get taken down.
“Time for an old-school ass kicking, especially if our RCMP know who’s doing it and isn’t punishing the kids or parents for any of it.”
