Westlock and area residents joined family and friends to honour the life of five-year old Lexah Makey on May 28.
Makey, a Westlock girl who attended St. Mary School, was killed in a two-vehicle collision on Highway 2 north of Clyde, May 14.
An outdoor community event organized by members of the Westlock Soccer Association, was held at Westlock Elementary School from 6:15 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. Lexah played soccer this spring as a member of the U7 team.
“All of us are just so heartbroken for the family, for that sweet little girl,” said Westlock Soccer Association member and event organizer, Amanda Peace. “I thought it would be really special to pay tribute to Lexah and her family.”
Lexah’s mom Megan Makey said her daughter loved bubbles and when organizers reached out, thought it was a wonderful way for the community to remember Lexah.
“I couldn’t think of a better way to honour her than to have everybody just blow bubbles up to Heaven. She loved bubbles,” said Makey, adding how thankful her family is for the community support.
“I couldn’t be more grateful and honoured by the overwhelming support we have received. The community has really come together in our time of need, making this devastating time one to make sure my Lexah Loo is not forgotten.”
Peace said blowing bubbles is something the entire community can partake and noted the support for the family, that included letters to the family by Lexah’s classmates and a GoFundMe page that has already raised more than $37,000.
“I’m so amazed how this community has come together,” said Peace. “Lexah touched so many lives … I know as a little girl in the community, she was involved and loved by so many.”
