Alberta Indigenous artist Alex Janvier's passing mourned

Celebrated Indigenous artist Alex Janvier from Cold Lake First Nations, passed away July 10 at 89 years-old.

COLD LAKE - Alex Janvier, a celebrated Indigenous artist from Cold Lake First Nations, has passed away at the age of 89 on July 10. Renowned for his stunning murals, Janvier's commissioned works adorn public institutions across Canada. His art, featured in numerous national and international exhibitions, captivates audiences with vibrant colours and distinctive lines. His work narrates the stories of his unique culture and life experiences, as highlighted on his official website. 

“We are deeply saddened by the loss of Alex Janvier, a beloved member of our community and a gifted Indigenous artist. His creativity enriched our lives and strengthened our connection to our culture and heritage. Through his profound storytelling, Alex’s artwork beautifully captured the essence of our traditions.” Cold Lake First Nations said in a public statement. 

“Our thoughts are with Alex’s family, friends, and everyone touched by his remarkable talent and spirit.” 

Cold Lake Mayor Craig Copeland expressed his grief and admiration for Janvier's contributions: "It is with deep sadness and a heavy heart that we learned of Alex Janvier’s passing. Our community has lost a tremendous inspiration and a voice for the arts.” 

Reflecting on his personal connection with Janvier, Copeland continued, “It was a great pleasure to have known Alex and count him among my friends. His influence on the world of art has travelled the globe and touched many lives. His work brought to light Indigenous culture and the profound connection First Nations communities have to the land, as well as the suffering they endured through colonialism. Alex’s incredible talents have created a lasting impact on the world of art and our community.” 

On behalf of the city, Copeland extended heartfelt condolences: “On behalf of the City of Cold Lake and our Council, we send our heartfelt condolences to his family. His legacy will live on through his work and his family, whom he cherished so deeply.” 

Located on Cold Lake First Nations, the Janvier Gallery remains a testament to Alex Janvier's legacy, showcasing his remarkable art pieces.
