Just in time for Family Violence Prevention Month, the Alberta Council of Women’s Shelters (ACWS) is launching a new tool to support men’s active allyship in helping end gender-based violence and abuse.
The Leading Change Expansion Pack is a box designed for men to use on their own to expand their knowledge with a series of guided activities to “level up” and help end gender-based violence in the province.
Thanks to the EPCOR Heart & Soul fund, it’s free.
"The sad truth is that the majority of domestic and sexual violence is perpetrated by men. We also know that most men are not violent, and we are calling upon then to help us lead change,” said Jan Reimer, Executive Director of ACWS. “Member shelters have directed us to invest in prevention initiatives that engage and galvanize the majority of the good guys out there to help shelters create the change we all need.”
The Expansion Pack features a series of guided activities and companion resources that guide the user through an experience: expanding knowledge; stretching ingrained ideas; growing active allyship.
"Leading Change connects with members of the public to ignite social change,” said Christie Lavan, ACWS Director of Community Engagement. "Our team embarked on a journey with local thoughtleaders in social innovation and design to create a unique, personalized intervention.”

Leading Change is the call to action of ACWS. The most dangerous form of domestic violence, coercive-controlling violence, has its roots in part in gender norms and stereotypes that permeate our culture. Leading Change asks every one of us to look at the ways in which we participate in this culture and how we can change it.
