“Look good, play good,” says 14-year-old golfer Chase Strang, from Airdrie, who brings colour to the course every tee time with his custom designed golf shirts.
Started in October of 2023, JQ Golf Clothing Co. originated when Chase asked his mother, Jacqueline, if he could buy a golf shirt with pink flamingos printed on it. They scoured the stores, but Jacqueline ultimately decided to custom-make a shirt for Chase.
From then on, every course where the Strang family played they would turn heads. Whether it is bananas, maple leafs, or palm trees, no prospect is off of the table for the clothing brand.
“We started going to golf tournaments, and people were asking if they could get a shirt, so we decided to make it a business,” said Chase.
Jacqueline also said that Chase’s coaches at Forge Golf really encouraged the Strang family to begin manufacturing the shirts, and she attributes a big part of JQ’s launch to them.
However, the designs truly caught fire when featured on the Professional Golfers Association (PGA) show, and now the funky youth golf shirts are in 13 pro-shops and courses around Canada.
But it wasn’t just Chase. His older brother, Tyson, then began pitching ideas for shirts, then his younger sister, Kennedy, until eventually all three siblings brought out their competitive spirit to see which designs would sell the most.
Jacqueline and her husband, Jeff Strang, handle the distribution, manufacturing, and marketing of the shirts, but Jacqueline admires how bonding the business endeavour has been for them.
“It’s really a family affair and business for us,” said Jacqueline. “We all have our input and our parts in it, and it's been really fun.”
JQ Golf Clothing Co. is the first entrepreneurial experience for Jacqueline and Jeff who have seen their once side-gig explode into a popular youth clothing clothing brand.
Chase’s career goal is to play on the PGA tour someday, and he has qualified to play at prestigious courses such as Pinehurst in North Carolina, but he says his newfound love for designing youth shirts won’t be fizzling out any time soon.
