A 40-year-old Athabasca woman was sentenced in Westlock Court of Justice on July 24 to time served after pleading guilty to assaulting a teenager with a wooden stick.
In a joint submission by defence and the Crown, Kelly Anne Gambler was given 30 days in jail followed by 12 months of probation for assault with a weapon against a 17-year-old girl. She was also handed eight days consecutive for breach of conditions. The court had ordered her not to be at the girl’s home.
Gambler was credited with 38 days for time served while on remand since her arrest on July 1.
Court heard that she had gotten into an argument with the teen and used a wooden stick to hit the girl twice.
Defence Andrew Zebak said his client has a history of substance abuse and it was unfortunate the situation with the teen had escalated.
Justice Carrie-Ann Downey said Gambler’s criminal record was an aggravating factor.
“It’s short but steady,” said Justice Downey.
