A local athlete has been selected to represent Canada in the International Association of Ultrarunners (IAU) 100 km World Championships this upcoming December.
Jessica McBride, who began long distance running in 2016, was the only female runner selected to represent Canada at this event.
McBride, who has experience in many types of marathons, is excited for the new challenge the World Championships bring.
“This race will be unique to me because it is the first time I'll be competing at an international level,” explained McBride.
“Another major difference is going to be the stark climate differences between India, and Canada. There is an intensive heat acclimation protocol that I have to incorporate while training.”
The training that McBride endures includes running six days a week, with each run ranging from 16 km to 40 km. The training also includes mobility twice a week, and training under Nike Trail Athlete, and Olympic trialist Matt Daniels.
Even though the training is tough, McBride embraces the challenge that comes with ultramarathons.
“I began long distance running because I wanted to challenge things I believed about myself,” shared McBride. “I allowed my past to influence my belief that I wasn’t a runner for a long time. After I had my third daughter I decided to take my power back, and started running.”
Being selected to represent Canada is an honour that McBride isn't taking for granted.
“The gratitude for being allowed the opportunity to fulfill my years-long dream of running for my country was overwhelming,” said McBride. “I have raced so many times in my tenure as an athlete, but always for myself. In December I will run for Canada.
“I am so proud to be Team Canada.”
