ASIRT has been called in to investigate an officer involved shooting in Edmonton which claimed the life of an Edmonton man.

According to the notice sent out to the media on Dec. 6, the Alberta Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT) was directed to investigate an officer-involved shooting by Edmonton police officers on Dec. 3.

At 8:33 p.m., the Edmonton Police Service (EPS) received a 911 call reporting a man walking around brandishing a knife and approaching civilians in the area of 112 Street and 100 Avenue.

The report states that at approximately 8:39 p.m., police arrived on scene. The man approached the police with a knife and an altercation ensued between officers and the man. Police used a conducted energy weapon and a physical altercation ensued. One of the officers discharged their firearm, striking the man. Police and paramedics provided medical treatment, but the man died at the scene.

ASIRT’s investigation will examine the use of force by the officers.
