Mayor Jyoti Gondek updates Calgary water users on the ongoing water crisis on July 15.

Calgary Mayor Jyoti Gondek explained why the City remains under a level 3 water restriction in an update on July 15.

The feeder main has been filled with water but caution is being exercised is around the speed at which water flows through the pipe, which has increased over the past two weeks. Due to things looking good with only one pump at the Bearspaw Water facility turned on, the City is planning to turn on one more pump mid day today.

Gondek said the next 72 hours are critical to see how the pipe will respond to the increased flow of water and the additional pressure.

If the pipe remains stable there will be more information about moving to stage 2 on Thursday. The flow of water through the pipe is only at 55 per cent capacity, and 70 per cent will be needed to move to stage 2 and stage 1 restrictions, stated City officials.

The latest update from the City of Airdrie was posted on July 11, stating Airdrie remains under a level three outdoor water restriction.

A break in one of Calgary's feeder mains on June 5 led to a water crisis for people in Calgary and the surrounding communities using Calgary's water. Indoor and level four outdoor water restrictions were implemented for approximately one month, after which restrictions were lowered to level 3.

City officials stated three new wire snaps were located in various spots along the feeder since the repairs were made and water began flowing. This doesn't require an emergency repair but provides information about how to continue.
