KANANASKIS COUNTRY – A 45-year-old man is in hospital after sustaining serious burn injuries in an explosion around a campfire at Mount Kidd RV Park.
Kananaskis Emergency Services (KES) and Alberta Health Services EMS responded to the event around 7:20 p.m. Thursday (July 20), a STARS air ambulance was also dispatched from Calgary.
“Given the nature of the injuries and the distance to hospital, STARS was requested to attend and the KES helipad was used as a rendezvous point,” said Stuart Brideaux, AHS EMS spokesperson.
“They subsequently flew him to Foothills Medical Centre in serious condition – not life-threatening, but definitely serious burn injuries sustained from tending a campfire.”
STARS spokesperson Deborah Tetley said the man’s injuries resulted from an explosion.
The details of how the explosion occurred are unclear but KES fire chief Gary Robertson said there was no fire hazard on arrival to the campground.
“Our crews responded pretty much exclusively for medical assistance and so there was no fire suppression required,” he said.
