St. Albert RCMP say that nobody was injured as a result of a vehicle fire in the Erin Ridge community in St. Albert yesterday.
Cst. M.J. Burroughs said in an email this morning that emergency crews, including fire trucks from all three of St. Albert's fire halls, responded to the scene, which was an apartment building parking lot off of Element Drive, just before 6:00 p.m. yesterday evening.
“The driver of a green, 2009, 4 door Mazda accidentally hit the gas instead of the brakes when initiating a turn and collided with an electrical power box, causing both the vehicle and power box to catch fire,” Burroughs said, adding that the driver was the only occupant of the vehicle, and escaped the scene unharmed.
A resident of an adjacent apartment building, who asked to remain anonymous for privacy concerns, told the Gazette that power to the building went out shortly after the driver struck the electrical box, but power has since been restored.
The resident also said he had watched the driver “acting off” and struggling to park the car prior to hitting the electrical box, but Burroughs said that alcohol or drug use was not a factor in the accident, no charges have been laid, and there will be no further RCMP investigation.
