Discharging untreated sewage, garbage, cat feces, garbage gets Alberta house shut down

AHS shuts down home east of Airdrie due to water damage from sewage back ups, garbage and mould growing in the home.

Twenty-one health violations led to the closure of a Rocky View County home this month, just east of Airdrie. Alberta Health Services (AHS) issued the order earlier this month, stating all occupants must leave the residence of 230080 Range Road 285, Rocky View County by June 30.

Among the health violation sited, there were issues with the septic tank, water damage from sewage back ups, doors could not be fully closed or locked, and there were missing necessities such as light switch covers, electrical outlet covers, smoke alarms, and ceilings in the basement. There were also no functioning fans or windows in bathrooms, and one bathroom did not have a functioning toilet.

The pump room walls had mould growth and there was an accumulation of clutter, garbage, and cat feces throughout the house.

A hose running from the septic tank to the back field indicated untreated sewage had been discharged.

The inspection found that the conditions breached the Public Health Act and the Housing Regulation, Alberta Regulation 173/99, and the Minimum Housing and Health Standards. Conditions were or could become injurious or dangerous to the public health or might hinder the prevention or suppression of disease, the notice stated.

The owner is ordered to immediately make reparations to the violations listed in the notice and provide documentation from a qualified professional stating the septic system is functioning appropriately.

Until the work is completed to the satisfaction of AHS, the premises will remain closed for tenant accomodation purposes.

The last property to be shut down in Rocky View County occurred in late April, at a property in West Rocky View County.
