The owner of an eight-year-old Kerry blue terrier that was hit and killed by a vehicle said the driver has come forward.
Jody Reid said he was walking with his dog Reggie at night on Jan. 9 when a vehicle struck the dog in a crosswalk and fled the scene.
Reid said the incident took place before 8 p.m. at Cimarron Boulevard and Cimarron Vista Gate.
The dog was killed and Reid said he was nearly hit as well.
In a widely-shared Facebook post the day after the incident, Reid asked for help identifying the driver, who later came forward and apologized in a private social media message, Reid said.
“The driver of the vehicle did message me, and he did come forward, so that’s super positive,” Reid said.
The Facebook post included photos of a pickup truck.
Reid said he’s sent the information to Okotoks Municipal Enforcement and the RCMP, which both responded to the incident, and said he will leave it to law enforcement to decide how to proceed.
RCMP said there is usually no offence for hitting an animal, and that no other information would be made available. OME was not immediately available to comment.
The incident happened on a busy east-west road that goes through a residential area between two commercial hubs in Okotoks.
“That boulevard, it’s kind of crazy,” Reid said. “There’s so much going on all the time.”
Reid said he couldn’t see the vehicle when he started to cross the street and that he was most of the way across when the incident happened.
