FIELD, B.C. – Drivers should expect delays on the Trans-Canada Highway in Yoho National Park over the coming weeks after damage was discovered on the Chancellor-Kicking Horse bridge.
Parks Canada officials say staff on a routine patrol on Thursday (April 11) discovered erosion on a wing wall of the bridge, located on the highway between Wapta Falls and Hoodoo Creek campground.
They say the eastbound lane of the bridge has been closed to traffic and the westbound lane has been reconfigured to single-lane alternating traffic, adding delays are expected.
James Eastham, public relations and communications officer for Lake Louise, Yoho and Kootenay field unit, said the eastbound lane of the bridge is closed until the stabilization work on the wall and riverbank is completed.
"It is estimated repairs will take up to two weeks to complete and restore two-lane traffic,” he said.
“The bridge remains open to single-lane alternating traffic in the westbound lane. Traffic control is in place and anyone travelling in the area should expect speed reductions and delays.”
