LAC STE. ANNE COUNTY, Alta — A drunken individual who stole a school bus in Edmonton ended up causing a major collision on Friday morning just west of the intersection between Highways 43 and 33 in Lac Ste. Anne County, near the community of Gunn.

According to a news release, at approximately 12 p.m., Parkland RCMP received multiple reports of a collision involving a school bus at the location mentioned above, which resulted in temporarily blocking off Highway 43.

The investigation is continuing, but it appears the school bus, which did not have any children aboard, had originally been parked near Misericordia Hospital in Edmonton. The bus was left locked but was unattended with the keys inside.

The driver was grossly intoxicated, the release states, and allegedly collided with a barrier truck at a construction site before smashing into an unoccupied pick-up truck, sending it into the ditch. Fortunately, none of the construction crew were injured.

The driver suffered minor injuries and was transported to hospital. Charges are expected to be laid at the completion of the investigation.

It is not known what school division the bus originally belonged to or if it was privately-owned.
