Jim Mitchell, a former fish and wildlife officer with 38 years of experience, has released a memoir, Alberta Game Warden: Behind the Badge of 172.
The anthology of 34 true short stories offers readers an intimate glimpse into the extraordinary adventures, challenges and encounters experienced throughout the author’s career.
Mitchell was posted in the High River District from 1985-1998, covering High River, Okotoks, Millarville and Diamond Valley.
From heart-pounding wildlife rescues to moments of connection with nature, Mitchell said each story resonates with authenticity and reverence for the creatures that inhabit Alberta.
“Resource-protection legislation is put in place for several reasons, whether for public safety or protecting our valued fish and wildlife resources,” he said. “I love the law and have loved catching poachers since my first day on the job when I apprehended two night hunters that had jacklighted and shot a calf moose.”
Mitchell said the stories included in the book provide the reader a behind the scenes glimpse into the life of a game warden.
