The Alberta RCMP Major Crimes Unit is investigating a homicide after human remains were found inside a burning vehicle near Langdon.

According to police, Langdon firefighters responded to a vehicle fire on Township Road 230 in Rocky View County at approximately 5:30 a.m. on Nov. 8.

Once the flames were extinguished by the department’s firefighters, human remains were discovered within the vehicle.

Police were called, and the Alberta RCMP Major Crimes Unit took over carriage of the case as the death was deemed suspicious.

An autopsy conducted by the Calgary office of the Chief Medical Examiner on Nov. 9 determined the victim’s manner of death to be homicide.

An RCMP spokesperson told the Rocky View Weekly on Thursday the name of the victim was not being released at this time, and would likely not be released unless the investigation warranted it. They confirmed no further details would be forthcoming at this time as the matter was under active investigation.

The case resembles another Rocky View County homicide in 2015, when another burning vehicle was found in a ditch along Township Road 280 and Range Road 283, northeast of Airdrie, in September of that year. Police later determined the person found inside the vehicle had also been a victim of homicide.

In September of this year, the body of a 24-year-old Red Deer man, also later determined by police to be the victim of homicide, was found beside a remote oil lease road off of Township Road 310 in Mountain View County.
