UPDATE: Mudslide debris cleared, section of Banff National Park highway reopened

A section of Highway 93 North in Banff National Park has reopened after mudslide debris blocked the road for nearly 24 hours.

BANFF NATIONAL PARK – Highway 93 North has reopened from the Icefields Parkway to Saskatchewan River Crossing on Saturday evening (Aug. 17) after a mudslide closed a section of the road for almost 24 hours.

Parks Canada and 511 reported just after 8 p.m. that crews have cleared debris from the area, approximately five kilometres south of Saskatchewan River Crossing near Mt. Murchison in Banff National Park, and reopened it to traffic in both directions.

“The Icefield Centre, Mistaya Canyon, Bow Lake, and Peyto Lake are all accessible again via Highway 1 at Lake Louise. The Icefields Parkway remains closed north of the Icefield Centre for wildfire response in Jasper National Park,” said Amy Krause, Parks Canada acting, partnering and engagement officer for Banff, Yoho and Kootenay national parks, in an email.

Crews responded to the "large mudslide" on Friday (Aug. 16) at approximately 9 p.m., which shut down the section of the highway. Krause said there was no risk to public safety.

Jasper National Park remains closed between Athabasca Glacier and the Jasper townsite.
