ÎYÂRHE NAKODA – Local emergency services in Îyârhe (Stoney) Nakoda First Nation are warning the public of a “series of loud bangs” that may be heard in the Mînî Thnî area this afternoon.

The loud noises are due to special effects associated with Netflix filming its new American western action drama television series The Abandons

“There is a TV production firm that is doing some simulated explosions – think of a large firecracker,” said Nakoda Emergency Services director Reg Fountain. “It may echo or reverberate and we want to make sure that people are aware.”

Fountain said an advisory is in place so the public is aware and also as a safety precaution. It is only in place for Wednesday (Aug. 14).

“These simulated explosions will occur at 3:30 p.m., 4:30 p.m., and 5:30 p.m., with about four bangs at each time period,” states the advisory notice.

Filming is taking place in the western portion of the Mînî Thnî reserve area. An exact location is not being released.

“All possible safety precautions have been emplaced for the protection of Nation members and livestock in the affected area,” states the notice.

The Abandons has been filming its first season in the Calgary area since May and is expected to wrap shooting in the area mid-October, according to the Alliance of Canadian Cinema, Television and Radio Artists.
