Man charged in MP Yurdiga harassment case

Yurdiga and staff safe after alleged threats at Parliament.

Fort McMurray-Cold Lake MP David Yurdiga and his Parliament office staff are said to be safe — and a 62 year old northern Alberta man is facing charges of uttering threats after an RCMP investigation wrapped up on Tuesday.

Fort McMurray RCMP released information on Wednesday night saying Bradley Love, 62, of Fort McMurray is facing charges of making an indecent telephone call with intent to alarm and uttering threats to cause death or bodily harm. 

On Tuesday, RCMP in Fort McMurray received a call from the Office of the Sergeant-at-Arms, alerting them to incidents that had taken place at the House of Commons in Ottawa. The incidents were described as "an allegation of threats against Member of Parliament David Yurdiga. RCMP say Parliament Hill Security in the nation's capital did take measures to assess the situation, and have also taken measures to ensure the safety of MP David Yurdiga and his staff.

Fort McMurray RCMP's General Investigation Section (GIS) undertook the investigation and arrested the suspect the same day they were notified of the allegations.

The suspect has been released from custody until his court date in Fort McMurray Provincial Court on March 17.

RCMP say no further information on the case will be released as it is before the courts.

Yurdiga, 56, was born in Lac La Biche and resides in Fort McMurray. He has been the region's federally-elected member of Parliament , representing the Conservative party since 2015.  The Fort McMurray-Cold Lake riding takes in a wide area of the Lakeland, including Lac La Biche, Conklin, Plamondon, Cold Lake and the rural Fort McMurray area.

Tuesday's alleged incident took place on the first day back for MPs in Ottawa after a week-long break at the start of February.
