Police have identified a possible suspect vehicle in Thursday’s hit and run that killed a pedestrian east of Innisfail.

Police now believe, based on initial evidence at the scene, that the vehicle involved in the fatality is a 2019 or older Chevrolet or GMC 2500 or 3500 HD pickup truck, RCMP said in a lunch-hour update.

“The vehicle will have damage to its passenger side,” the update noted.

RCMP Cpl. Troy Savinkoff said in a media release earlier in the day that at 8:14 a.m. on March 28 Innisfail RCMP was dispatched to a fatal hit and run on Highway 590, about 22 kilometres east of Innisfail near the intersection of Highway 590 and Highway 805.

Savinkoff said EMS and RCMP located a deceased male in the south ditch of Highway 590.

He said the RCMP investigation revealed the male victim was dressed in black clothing and was walking westbound on Highway 590.

Savinkoff said the man was last seen alive walking on the highway at about 6:30 a.m.

He said it was sometime between 6:30 a.m. and 8:09 a.m. that the man was struck by a vehicle that was believed to be travelling east on Highway 590.

Savinkoff said RCMP remain on scene and the investigation continues.

He said RCMP are not releasing the identity of the victim at this time.

“RCMP investigators are looking to speak to any drivers that were in that area at that time that may have information,” said Savinkoff. “Specifically, investigators are interested in any dash camera footage that may exist from drivers that were in the area at that time.”

Anyone with information about this incident or those responsible are asked to call the Innisfail RCMP at 403-227-3341 or their local police.

Anyone wanting to remain anonymous can contact Crime Stoppers by phone at 1-800-222-8477 (TIPS), by internet at www.tipsubmit.com, or by SMS (check your local Crime Stoppers www.crimestoppers.ab.ca for instructions).
