COLD LAKE, Alta. - On Monday afternoon, a Public Service Announcement from the National Defence confirmed that a loud noise heard by many in the Cold Lake area was in fact a sonic boom from the nearby Cold Lake Air Weapons Range.

On Aug. 29, at about 11:36 a.m., a CF-18 Hornet from 4 Wing Cold Lake was conducting training in the air weapons range, "within the restricted airspace which resulted in a sonic boom. The CF-18 was approved for supersonic flight," according to the PSA.

Sonic booms happen regularly within the Cold Lake Air Weapons range and other associated air space. Sometimes, atmospheric conditions can cause the sonic boom to travel longer distances than they usually do.
