The province has launched two new web applications designed to provide up-to-date wildfire information.

The wildfire dashboard is an interactive tool that displays statistics on active wildfires in the province, including sizes, locations, suspected causes and other information.

The fire permit portal allows users to access permits required for burning activities other than campfires during wildfire season. The permits help wildfire officials determine if reported smoke or fire is from permitted burns or wildfires in a forest protection area.

The permits outline conditions and restrictions on burns, including location, time and date, and any suppression tools required.

“These new tools will empower residents and visitors with the information they need to make smart decisions during wildfire season,” Nate Horner, minister of Agriculture, Forestry and Rural Economic Development, said in a news release issued today.

“Albertans want to be in the know during wildfire seasons and do their part to prevent human-caused wildfires.”

In 2021, 67 per cent of wildfires in the province were human-caused, he said.

Fire permits are also still available at local forest area offices or by phone.
