Two people have died following a two vehicle collision on Highway 28 in the County of Smoky Lake in the early morning hours of May 28.

Emergency crews responded to the call at about 12:45 a.m. Tuesday morning, near Range Road 130 at Highway 28. Smoky Lake RCMP responded to the collision.

"Though the matter is still under investigation, preliminary findings suggest that a SUV, driving at a high rate of speed on Range Road 130, failed to stop at a stop sign and struck a sedan that was travelling east on Highway 28," according to RCMP.

The driver of the sedan, a woman from Cold Lake, was pronounced deceased on scene and the passenger, a 36-year-old man from Meadow Lake, Sask., was transported to hospital by STARS, but was later pronounced deceased.

"The driver of the SUV was brought to the hospital with serious, life-threatening injuries while the two passengers were transported with varying levels of injuries," according to police. "Alcohol and/or drugs are suspected to be a factor in the collision."

Alberta RCMP say thoughts are with the family and friends of the deceased.
