Okotoks' Finlay Knox and the Canadian men's swimming team had a shot at history on day one of competition at the Olympic Games.

In pursuit of Canada's first ever medal in the men's 4x100m freestyle relay, the Canadian team of Knox, Yuri Kisil, Josh Liendo and Javier Acevedo earned a sixth-place finish amidst a strong field in La Defense Arena on July 27 at the 2024 Paris Summer Olympic Games.

The Canadians touched the wall in 3:12.18, a significant improvement from the qualifying time of 3:12.77, with Knox swimming a strong third leg in the relay. The United States, Australia and Italy took home the gold, silver and bronze medals, respectively.

Earlier in the day, Canada captured its first medal of the Games in the pool with 17-year-old phenom Summer McIntosh earning the silver in the women's 400m freestyle. The Canadian women's 4x100m freestyle relay team — featuring McIntosh, Taylor Ruck, Maggie Mac Neil and Penny Oleksiak — just missed out on the podium with a fourth-place finish.

Knox will be back to compete individually in his signature event, the 200m individual medley, on Thursday. The 200m IM heats begin on Aug. 1 with the semifinal later that day. The 200m IM final is held on Aug. 2 at 12:43 p.m. MST. Knox is the reigning world champion in the event.

The Okotoks Mavericks alumnus is expected to be part of Canada's 4x100m medley relay team which has its heats on Aug. 3 with the final held just after 11 a.m.
