An Okotoks ultrarunner is nearing Alberta on his latest bid to break a cross-Canada running record.
Dave Proctor hopes to run from St. John's, N.L. to Victoria, B.C., in 66 days. As of July 7, he is on day 54 of his attempt and is in the Swift Current, Sask, area.
On his FaceBook page, Proctor reports that he took a tumble on uneven pavement and fell on June 23, sustaining a concussion. He continued that day, writing that at 33 degrees C, it was the hottest day he’d encountered so far.
He hasn’t slowed down and continues to average about 106 kilometres each day.
Proctor is chasing a record set in 1991 by Al Howie who completed the cross-Canada run in 72 days, 10 hours. This is Proctor’s second attempt at the feat. His first, in 2018, was scuttled when an injury forced him to abandon the attempt as he ran through Manitoba, after completing 2,415 kilometres of the trip.
Proctor, from High River, AB, lives in Okotoks. When he isn’t running down a Canadian highway, he is a registered massage therapist at a Calgary sports clinic.
