One person has died following an early morning fire in Diamond Valley.
At about 3:30 a.m. on Jan. 7, Diamond Valley Fire Rescue was dispatched for a residential fire alarm in the 500 block of Windsor Avenue, Deputy Fire Chief Trevor Doublet said.
While on route, firefighters got further information confirming there was a fire and that one person needed help.
“We arrived and found a house filled with smoke,” Doublet said.
“Our fire crews made entry and found a male, adult male deceased in the basement,” he said.
An investigation found the fire was accidental and started near the victim.
The cause of death is being investigated by the Alberta Medical Examiner’s Office, and the name of the deceased will not be released at this time.
Other residents in the home were warned of the fire by the smoke detector and alarm system and were able to evacuate.
Doublet said they were treated on-scene for minor injuries, including smoke inhalation and minor burns.
“It's tragic, but it highlights the importance of having working smoke and fire detection,” Doublet said.
