KANANASKIS COUNTRY – Asphalt is being laid along the frontage of parking areas for Grassi Lakes, Ha Ling Peak and Whiteman's Pond on Highway 742.
Paving is intended to reduce dust where pedestrians cross the road to access hiking trails.
“Crews are placing patches of thin layer asphalt material totalling about 900 metres in length on the existing gravel surface along three separate sections of the Smith Dorrien Trail along the Canmore hill to control the dust generated by passing vehicles,” said Wayne Wood, communications advisor for Alberta Transportation and Economic Corridors, in an email.
The work began Thursday (June 6) and is scheduled to finish by 7 p.m. Friday (June 7).
According to the province, there are no current plans to pave any other sections of the highway, which is gravel from Ken Ritchie Way into Spray Valley Provincial Park, and most of Peter Lougheed Provincial Park.
Alberta 511 says motorists and other road users should expect delays in the area due to lane closures and flag persons until road work is complete.
