A joint police operation wrapped up with over 80 arrests made for a variety of crimes in southern Alberta.
Alberta RCMP, Calgary police and Alberta sheriffs conducted the joint operation in November as part of a larger crackdown on repeat offenders that took place across the province.
In southern Alberta, 88 people were arrested, including an Airdrie man with charges for property crime who has been connected to sexual interference, sexual assault, property crimes and drug trafficking, RCMP said.
RCMP said there are "tens of thousands" of unique offenders in Alberta, and they are ranked by the department based on the harm they cause in individual communities.
All police forces in the province are now sharing information to have a better idea of the criminals that are active in different jurisdictions to create a province-wide priority offender list, RCMP said.
“Law enforcement needs to work together to ensure that jurisdictional borders do not impede our ability to catch the criminals causing the most harm across Alberta,” Alberta RCMP Supt. Mike McCauley said.
“A small percentage of criminals cause a significant amount of harm across the province, and by using data to drive our work like we do in operations like these, the impact is incredible,” McCauley said.
Province-wide, individuals arrested during the joint operation had warrants for all types of crimes, including arson, drug trafficking, robbery and sexual offences, police said.
