Alberta ranchers will get $340 million to deal with the drought that decimated the feed for livestock through the summer.

On Sept. 7 the province announced the funding support program, where ranchers can apply for up to $200 per head through AgriRecovery.

The Canada-Alberta Livestock Feed Assistance Initiative through AgriRecovery will help cover feed and water access costs for breeding female livestock across the province.

“Alberta’s livestock producers have experienced exceedingly dry conditions for months, putting additional stress on the very Albertans who feed Canadian families. Alberta’s government is proud to support the delivery of up to $340 million in much-needed relief to help our livestock producers make it through this difficult season,” said Alberta Minister of Agriculture and Forestry Devein Dreeshen in a press release.

Payments will be released after applications are received, and once they are approved and processed, those who sign up for the direct deposit option will see payments toward the end of the month.

The province will be talking a feed-need approach, which will be supplemented by receipts, and a secondary payment of up to $106 per head of livestock will be available to producers who have experienced extraordinary costs because of the drought, on top of the initial payment.

The program will be administered through the Agriculture Financial Services Corporation (AFSC). Program terms and conditions are posted on corporation's website.

An AFSC Connect account is required to receive payments. Directions on how to sign up are available on the website.
