The natural gas pipeline rupture near Edson on Tuesday that sparked a wildfire was not a national security event, according to RCMP.
“The RCMP can confirm that INSET was engaged with the Edson RCMP and industry partners,” RCMP said in a statement to the Fitzhugh.
“The investigation shows that there is nothing to suggest that this was a national security incident.”
A rupture on a segment of TC Energy’s NGTL natural gas pipeline system started a wildfire in Yellowhead County.
The initial ignition of natural gas at the rupture site has been extinguished, and the affected section of the pipeline has been isolated and shut down.
The secondary fire is now considered under control and does not pose a threat to any community.
Fire crews will continue extinguishing hotspots into the weekend.
The 60-hectare wildfire is located 28 kilometres north northeast of Obed Lake, 35 kilometres northwest of Edson and 55 kilometres northeast of Hinton.
A fire advisory is now in effect for the Edson Forest Area due to dry conditions and the presence of exposed dry and dead vegetation.
