An Airdrie RCMP officer has been charged with assault with a weapon.
Constable Maxime Bedard (37) was charged with one count each of assault with a weapon and uttering threats. He is scheduled to appear in Alberta Court of Justice on Tuesday, May 14, 2024 in Calgary.
On April 3, the Calgary Police Service arrested the officer after an investigation into a report of an assault which occurred in Calgary on Saturday, March 9.
It’s alleged that a man was assaulted outside of a northwest Calgary apartment building by the off-duty officer. The victim was struck after falling to the ground, but did not suffer any injuries.
Constable Bedard has seven years of service with the RCMP. He has been suspended with pay. Police say once the criminal matter has been resolved, the constable's duty status will be reviewed.
A statement from the RCMP asks that the public not rush to judgment too quickly.
“The Alberta RCMP believes in processes that seek the facts and it’s important that the actions of all those involved, including the police, are assessed fairly and transparently,” the statement reads. “This is why, when we become aware of a situation that requires review, we immediately initiate internal review processes, separate from the legal process. The internal review includes the actions of the RCMP, the use of force during the incident, and the duty status of the member. As this matter is now before the courts, the Alberta RCMP are unable to provide further information.”
