St. Albert RCMP are appealing for any video footage that may exist of a collision that injured two people and killed a dog last Thursday, Aug. 8.
At around 6:30 p.m. that evening, an orange 1934 Ford B40 sedan driven by a 68-year-old man from Millet jumped the curb and struck the pedestrians, two Beaumont residents in their mid-40s, and the canine, which was not described by police.
The car was a participant in the Rock'n August show and shine taking place on Green Grove Drive just off St. Albert Trail.
The driver currently faces one count of drive carelessly under the Traffic Safety Act.
K Division RCMP media officer Cpl. Troy Savinkoff confirmed the dog died as a result of its injuries at the scene.
The pedestrians were brought to hospital, treated and released.
The driver co-operated with police. Savinkoff said alcohol is not believed to be a factor.
“It was a low-speed collision, but the driver momentarily lost control,” he said.
A careless driving conviction carries six demerit points and a fine of $567 in Alberta.
Rock’n August president Rick Dory was still emotional when reached by phone early Friday afternoon, calling the incident “devastating.
“I have a hard time speaking about it,” he said. “That family’s lives changed in the blink of an eye.”
Dory said this is the first such tragedy in the history of Rock’n August, which has raised more than $1.4 million for diabetes research since 1996.
“Our hearts go out to the family.”
The remaining Rock’n August events continued as scheduled.
