A 34-year-old Calgary man is facing more than 20 charges following traffic stop outside Carstairs on Highway 2 last month that saw gunfire exchanged between the suspect and police officers.
RCMP were contacted by Calgary Police Service shortly before midnight on June 22 with a report of a suspect who had fled from police and was being tracked by HAWKS helicopter, said RCMP Cpl. Gina Slaney in a release issued Wednesday, July 17.
“In coordination with officers from Calgary Police Service, RCMP from Didsbury and Olds set up a covert tire deflation device and were about to disable vehicle on the (Highway 2) near Highway 581, east of Carstairs.
“A traffic stop was conducted and there was an exchange of gunfire between the suspect and police resulting in no injuries to police or the suspect,” she said.
“Police were able to disengage from the suspect and set up containment. RCMP made verbal contact with the suspect and successfully de-escalated the incident. The suspect surrendered to police.”
Stefan Service, 34, faces the following charges:
• Two counts of mischief under $5,000;
• Causing unnecessary suffering to an animal;
• Flight from police;
• Dangerous operation of a conveyance;
• Fail to comply with blood demand;
• Two counts of discharge firearm with intent to wound/maim;
• Two counts assault on peace officer with weapon;
• Reckless discharge of a firearm at a place;
• Three counts of reckless discharge of a firearm endangering life;
• Possession of firearm in motor vehicle;
• Use firearm in the commission of an offence;
• Two counts of possession of weapon for dangerous purpose;
• Two counts of possession of firearm contrary to prohibition order;
• Resist arrest; and
• Flight from peace officer.
Contacted by the Albertan, Cpl. Slaney could not immediately say what type of animal was involved in the causing unnecessary suffering charge.
Service has been remanded in custody pending an appearance in Calgary Court of Justice on July 17.
The investigation continues and further charges may be pursued, she said.
