Saanich police are trying to identify a pair of suspects in connection with a case where more than $2,500 was extorted from a victim using the dating app Grindr last month.
The suspects created a profile on the online dating application, which caters to the LGBTQ community, using the names Jay and Oliver and made contact with the victim. They gathered personal and private information during a conversation, and provided false information about themselves before meeting the victim in person.
They then used the information they had gleaned to extort more than $2,500 from the victim.
“We are concerned that there may be other similar incidents that have yet to be reported,” said Const. Markus Anastasiades.
The suspects were captured in CCTV footage. Both are described as 18 to 20 years old with a slim build, with one six feet tall and the other five-foot-nine.
Anyone with information or who might have had a similar experience is asked to call Det. Const. Dane Nicholson of the Major Crime Unit at [email protected] or at 250-475-4321.
Anonymous reports can be made at Greater Victoria Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477).
