Airdrie's fire services responded to two fires and a water rescue on April 10 and April 11.
Crews are currently on scene of a fire at Canadian Tire. A large compacter is on fire and the sprinkler system has kept it from extending inside.
There will be plumes of black smoke and strong odours due to wind. Road access on the west side of Canadian Tire is shut down. Crews will be on scene for awhile as they await a heavy tow truck to pull the compacter away to a safe distance.
Airdrie Fire Chief Mike Pirie stated sprinkler systems are crucial to saving lives and preserving buildings as this fire clearly demonstrated today. There are no injuries reported and the store was completely evacuated.
There is an Engine and a Ladder truck remaining on scene until the fire is completely out. The public is asked to avoid the area if possible.
Pirie also reported crews responded to two separate house fires last night, April 10.
One fire occurred in Meadowbrook and one in Kings Heights, they were deemed unrelated.
All occupants are safe with no injuries were reported.
While there is significant damage to both homes, the fire was contained to the exteriors.
The Kings Heights and Veterans station crews were first on scene.
Water rescue
A cockatiel dog that fell through the ice in Airdrie was rescued and brought back to its owner.
The dog got out of the home and ended up on the ice. Reports did not state where the rescue occurred.
Pirie said the owners did the right thing and didn't go out onto the water.
"It's a story with a happy ending and an interesting story I'm sure for the whole family," Pirie said.
