CALGARY — This summer's Calgary Stampede menu has some strange and spicy twists on traditional favourites.

A list has been released of 40 new items that are to be offered at the annual rodeo and exhibition, which runs from July 8 to July 17.

There's pizza with vine-ripened tomato sauce and slow-braised Alberta beef tongue, Korean squid ink corn dogs — half hot dog, half mozzarella dipped in black batter to resemble tentacles — and popcorn chicken dipped in popping candy.

Other highlights include waffle cookie dough ice-cream sandwiches, glazed doughnut grilled cheese, and Kraft dinner soft-serve ice cream.

There are regular hot dogs and mealworm hot dogs, regular lemonade and bad breath lemonade with garlic and onion, regular mini doughnuts and maple-glazed Oreo doughnuts.

All of the items will be available at the Stampede grounds during the 10-day event.

"The spectacular and inventive dishes brought to the midway every year truly make the Calgary Stampede experience fun and memorable," Kyle Russell, director of programming, said in a news release Tuesday.

"The culinary experience is a 'must-do.'"
