City of Calgary crews working to replace several hot spots in a water main feeder.

With welding completed at the sites of the hot spots where steel pipe is replacing damaged concrete and with concrete curing at one hot spot, repair work on the feeder main is in its final stages, stated Calgary Mayor Jyoti Gondek in a morning update on June 25.

A feeder main in Calgary broke on June 5, disrupting the city's water infrastructure and creating a water crisis for Calgary and surrounding communties that use its water, including Airdrie. A week after work began to fix the main break, the City discovered five more hot spots that needed immediate repairs.

Backfilling of the hot spot sites will begin today and lead into tomorrow. As the work is winding down, refilling the pipe, bringing it back to pressure, and testing the water will be getting started next. This will take several days, according to Gondek.

An updated timeline for water to be restored is expected to be announced this afternoon.

In the meantime, Gondek urged people to continue conserving water. Once the water is back up and running, the water restrictions will slowly be lifted.

Calgary's water usage is close to the threshold for emergency purposes, she added. Water use is currently down 20 per cent than typical use in Calgary and more conservation is needed.
